Top 10 Things to do in Barbados

1. Diving & snorkeling

As with many islands in the Caribbean, much of the beauty of Barbados is to be found in the waters that surround it. Barbados has many coral reefs along its south west coast where you can see thousands of tropical fish. Tours usually start in Bridgetown but most of them offer pick-up services from various hotels.

2. Swim with turtles

In Barbados you can swim with sea turtles. Your tour guide will bring along food for them. The turtles already know when and where they will be fed and are already waiting for the food by the time you get in the water. You might be lucky and see a turtle on your own, but with this type of tour you are guaranteed to see one. There are many tour operators. Check with your hotel with which ones they cooperate.

3. Rum tasting

Rum is the most popular alcoholic drink in the Caribbean and Barbados is no exception to that. I recommend visiting Foursquare Rum Destillery. You can enter for free and see the production process of rum. For the rum tasting you will have to pay though. It’s well worth the money as they usually give you more shots than you have paid for. Just make sure to appoint a driver before you start.

4. Animal Flower Cave

Animal Flower Cave is the only accessible sea cave on the island. Waves will wash into the cave which is a stunning view. Beware though: if the sea is too rough the cave might be closed as it is too dangerous to go down. Animal Flower Cave got its name from little sea anemones that get sweapt into the cave by the waves. Locals call them animal flowers because they look like flowers but will close if touched.

5. St. Lawrence Gap

St. Lawrence Gap is located about 5 km southeast of Bridgetown. It’s famous for its 1.5 km strip of bars, hotels, dance clubs, restaurants, inns, resorts, and shops. This is the perfect location for a night out.

6. Sunbury Plantation House

If you want to know what a plantation house in Barbados in the 17th century looked like you should visit Sunbury Plantation House. Its interiour will take you back 400 years and you will get an idea what life was like for the upper class of the 1600s.

7. Speightstown

Speightstown is the second largest city of Barbados. It’s located on the northwest coast of the country. Speightstown features a beautiful promenade along the sea with little bars and restaurants. Watch out of the poisonous munchineel trees though. Don’t touch the fruits or the tree itself and don’t stand under the tree if it is raining. The trees are clearly marked to avoid incidents.

8. Gun Hill Signal Station

Gun Hill Signal Station is one of the highest points of the country. From here you will enjoy a beatiful view both over the island and the sea. The path to the top winds though a beautiful garden with many tropical flowers and butterflies. The entrance fee for adults is 10$ BDS.

9. Hemingway Fishing

Enjoy a day at sea, have some drinks with your friends and have your catch prepared for lunch. If you have ever wanted to do that, Barbados is the place.

10. Harrison's Cave

Harrison’s cave is a stalactite cave in the center of Barbados. You will explore the massive stream cave system using a little tramway.
