Monaco

General Information

Monaco is a city and a microstate on the French Riviera. France borders the country on three sides while the other side borders the Mediterranean Sea. It is the second-smallest and most densely-populated sovereign state in the world. It is neither a member of the European Union nor is it part of the Schengen Agreement. However, its borders and customs territory are treated as part of France. They drive on the right side of the road.

Visa

Holders of a EU passport don’t require a Visa. For holders of a different passport check out this link to see if you are required to apply for a visa or not or contact your ministery of foreign affairs.

Climate

Monaco has a Mediterranean climate with warm, dry summers and mild, rainy winters. Temperatures greater than 30 °C (86 °F) are rare as the atmosphere is temperate because of constant sea breezes. On the other hand, the nights are very mild, due to the fairly high temperature of the sea in summer. Generally, temperatures do not drop below 20 °C (68 °F) in this season. In the winter, frosts and snowfalls are extremely rare and generally occur once or twice every ten years.

Transportation

Monaco does not have an airport. However, Aéroport Nice Côte d’Azur (NCE) is only a 45 min bus ride away. There is also a railway station in Monaco. It’s named Monaco-Monte Carlo and is served by the SNCF, the French national rail system. Transport within Monaco is provided by the Monaco bus company (CAM). As Monaco is rather steep, there are public elevators to ease access to different levels.

Money, Money, Money

Currency

Even though Monaco is not part of the Eurozone it uses the Euro as its currency and has its own Monaco Edition of Euro coins. Check out the currency converter to find out about current exchange rates.

Cash

Monaco is a rather expensive country. To save yourself some money you can stay and eat in Nice or any other city along the Côte d’Azur and take the train to Monaco for a daytrip. This is actually what I did, so I can’t tell how much money you would need if you actually stayed in Monaco. Just so you are aware: many people do this, so the train is rather full.
