Andorra

General Information

Andorra is a landlocked microstate on the Iberian Peninsula, in the eastern Pyrenees, bordered by France in the north and Spain in the south. Its capital Andorra la Vella is the highest capital city in Europe, at an elevation of 1,023 metres above sea level. It is not a member of the European Union. There are full customs checks on the EU side of the border, as Andorra has low VAT and other indirect taxes, such as those for alcohol, tobacco and petrol, from which visitors might benefit. They drive on the right side of the road.

Visa

Holders of a EU passport don’t require a Visa. Holders of a non-EU passport must either have Visa-free entry into the Schengen area or hold a valid Schengen Visa with multiple entries. Check this link for more information. To find out if you need a Schengen Visa follow this link  or contact your ministery of foreign affairs.

Climate

Andorra has an alpine and continental climate. Its higher elevation means there is, on average, more snow in winter, lower humidity, and it is slightly cooler in summer.

Transportation

Andorra has neither an airport nor a railway system. The only way to get to Andorra using public transport is taking a bus from either Toulouse or Barcelona. You will need around 3h from either side. This fact doesn’t make Andorra a good candidate for a daytrip. You should stay at least one night.

Money, Money, Money

Currency

Even though Andorra is not part of the Eurozone it uses the Euro as its currency and has its own Andorra Edition of Euro coins. Check out the currency converter to find out about current exchange rates.

Accommodation

Depending on where you are staying prices will vary of course. You can get a good middle class hotel for around 25€ per person per night.

Cash

Chances are high you are travelling around Spain or France before going to Andorra, so you should already have stocked up your Euro supply. I needed around 40€ per day. This includes food, transportation and souvenirs. Of course it strongly depends on how much you shop 😉
