San Marino

General Information

San Marino is a microstate completely surrounded by Italy. Its capital is the San Marino Cittá and its largest city is Serravalle. San Marino is a member of the Council of Europe but neither of the European Union nor the Schengen Agreement. However, it has an open border with the EU (although some random police checks are made) and has had a customs union with the EU. They drive on the right side of the road.

Visa

There are no border formalities. Anyone visiting Italy with a visa can enter San Marino. However, it is possible for tourists to have a Passport Tourist Visa. It is available at the tourist office in San Marino Città for € 5,00.

Power

San Marino uses Type F (“Schuko”) and Type L plug outlets. They also work with Type C and E. The voltage is 230 Volt and the frequency is 50 Hz.

Transportation

San Marino has neither an airport nor any train stations. The only way to get there using public transport is taking a bus from Rimini. Tickets cost €5 one way and €9 return (same day) and can be bought either at the ticket office at the train station or on board. When you exit the train station turn left, this is where you will find the ticket office. The bus departs on the opposite side of Rimini train station close to Burger King. There is a sign with “Rimini/San Marino”.

Currency

Even though San Marino is not part of the Eurozone it uses the Euro as its currency and has its own San Marino Edition of Euro coins. Check out the currency converter to find out about current exchange rates.

Cash

Chances are high you are travelling around Italy before going to San Marino, so you should already have stocked up your Euro supply. I needed around 40€ for a daytrip to San Marino. This includes food, transportation and souvenirs. Of course it strongly depends on how much you shop 😉
